Memorial Day weekend usually means more DUI arrests

You've just had a couple beers and you had plenty to munch on at the barbecue. Sure, you are fine to drive. It's not like you're drunk. Look, you can still walk straight. You can say your alphabet backwards and forwards. Your speech is not even slurred. Besides, you are only a few miles from home. What could go wrong?

Memorial Day is just around the corner and that means law enforcement officials will be on the lookout for drunk drivers. Officers in Florida have been preparing for this weekend, long known for an increase in accidents resulting from intoxication. They are ready and willing to arrest anybody they think is guilty of driving under the influence - even if you've "only had a few."

Part of the preparation in Florida consisted of a wet lab for officers, local attorneys and residents. Individuals were challenged to drink until they met or surpassed the legal drinking limits. Surprisingly, many of the participants admitted they would have driven after reaching the legal limit.

This study was an eye-opener for those involved and tends to be the trouble with driving under the influence. Legal limits vary based on the circumstances, like if you have a commercial driver's license, but generally individuals with blood alcohol content levels (BACs) of .08 or higher are breaking the law. It may not take much for you to reach this level and you may feel "just fine" but that does not mean you should operate your vehicle.

While you may not feel as though you are "out of control," the field tests and breathalyzers may say otherwise. Alcohol impairs your ability to do many things, especially operating a motor vehicle. With the number of alcohol-related accidents, are you willing to take that risk? Is it worth driving home after a few beers if it means being stopped and arrested?
