If alimony is involved, recordkeeping is a must

There are a lot of different variables and issues that will be on the table when a couple decides it is time for a divorce. On top of the tangible issues at hand, the splitting spouses will be dealing with a lot of stress and anxiety throughout the divorce process. This is a life changing moment, one that presents a tremendous amount of upheaval. So it is understandable that many divorcing spouses may be a bit disorganized or confused about the whole process.

Spousal support, or alimony, is one of the factors that will linger on after the divorce is complete (should it be awarded in your particular case). It is especially important with spousal support that you remain organized and prepared throughout its existence. Keeping detailed records about payments and thoroughly tracking this form of support is essential.

When you are keeping records for spousal support, consider the following:

  • For the paying spouse, you should log the check number used for any payment, the date the payment was made, the address it was sent to, and a copy of the check, if possible. If you don't pay by check and instead pay with cash, make sure to write your own receipt and have your ex-spouse sign the receipt.
  • As for the alimony recipient, much of the same information should be tracked as well. You will also want to mark down the account number that the check is drawing from.

These records should be kept for a few years, just in case the Internal Revenue Service comes calling.
