When could a plea bargain be an option?

Although a majority of Americans, including those from Orlando, Florida and the surrounding area, are well-intentioned and try to adhere to the laws governing our land, people are human, and sometimes humans make mistakes. While most mistakes are minor in nature, there are situations where a mistake is not so minor, and it could lead to someone facing criminal charges.

While you could of course fight the charges, it is not uncommon for the prosecutor of the case to offer the defense a chance of a plea bargain. Plea bargains are not always offered, but they could be an opportunity to accept lesser or different charges if you plead guilty. This would also allow both sides to avoid court.

There are several factors that are taken into consideration when a prosecutor offers a plea bargain. They will look at the severity of the crimes in question, the strength of their case and the likelihood of a guilty verdict. Due to continual backlogs and the time and expenses of a court trial, many prosecutors are encouraged to offer plea deals to avoid going to court. It is important to recognize, however, that by accepting a plea deal, you will be essentially pleading guilty to the new charges, even if you are actually innocent. It might still be preferred, however, versus the odds of losing in court and facing a guilty verdict of the original charges.

If you find yourself facing criminal charges, it is important to prepare yourself as best you can before entering the courts. This may mean finding a strong criminal defense team to help you fight the charges. They may be able to work with the prosecutor to negotiate a plea bargain which could lessen the overall negative impact the charges have on your life and your future.
