Why you should fight a Florida traffic ticket

Perhaps you have read what to do when a Florida police officer pulls you over and how to try to get out of a ticket, but what next? What should you do once the officer hands you the ticket? You only have two options to choose from: take the punishment or fight it.

The answer is more obvious when serious charges, such as reckless driving or leaving the scene of an accident, are on the table. However, the decision becomes more difficult when you were simply speeding or ran a stop sign. In these cases, the easier thing to do may be to face the fine or go to driver improvement school, but it may not be the best thing.

Why traffic tickets matter

The sneaky thing about traffic tickets is that it is so easy to overlook their impact on your life. In addition to hurting your wallet, tickets can have the following consequences:

  • An increase in your insurance rates
  • Points on your driver's license
  • Loss of your license once you reach 12 points in a single year
  • Jail time if you do not pay the tickets

Losing your license or spending time in jail may lead to the termination of your employment and difficulty in finding a new job. Even minor infractions result in far-reaching consequences, such as financial problems from higher insurance and lost time from attending traffic school.

How to fight a traffic ticket

Before you make a choice, speak to an attorney about your case to get legal advice relevant to your circumstances. A criminal defense lawyer can help you understand the charges, determine the ways in which the officer may have made an error and prove that you were not violating any laws. You have the option of doing this on your own, but lack of experience, knowledge and confidence can cause you to lose your case or even make trying not worth the trouble.
